The Mixtape, bastard child of the vinyl disc. A medium for musical dialog, sharing your record collecting rarities and gems or radio broadcasts that had been stop edited into a lo-fi mash up replete with sonic feedback and foreign language dialog, these plastic sheathed magnetic tape filled slabs would be swapped and shared with fellow Vinyl Junkies, Music Fiends,Friends and Family and no courtship would be complete without several 90 minute seduction masterpieces being offered.
The tape could be made on one of these or by laying a portable on the floor in between the speakers if you saved, had upper middle class parents/older sibling or friends with some bread & knowledge you could really get your freak on with one of these.
This is all pre CD in fact other than using a CD player to get music that was only issued on CD onto tape so it to could be used in a mix the CD revolution didn't really effect my personal Mix Tape style, going from Vinyl right to MP3 sort of, I got promo Cd's and eventually had to buy somethings on CD cause the music was what I was after so it's not like i never stopped at CDville it was just a layover and i'm not a hater of the format but man those early CD's sound like a cat in heat through a tin can I did have enough of a Vinyl fetish to make this sticker in 1994 and started this minor lobbying
group "The Vinyl Preservation Society" [by lobbying group I mean we hung around lobby's as not to many people would have us in their apartments ] we also did a weekly party inviting people to come down with their favorite biscuit's and let em' be the DJ for a quarter hour or so we had some laughs and heard some great sounds.I recommend doing these type parties in your hood if ya got a bar or cafe that's willing..
It's nicer now that we all dig that the content is what's relevant and the delivery medium is just a container for it Substance over Style just like with our fellow beings.
Somewhere along the way the Mix Tape morphed from a deeply personal experience to a viral marketing scheme and now it's a full on "product" that's sold in music stores across the nation, sigh like so many things "underground" some bright bulb gets a corporate promotion for spilling the beans to some marketing v.p. and bingo ya gotta bop and weave to stay outta the line of fire. (I'm hip that it's deeper this but time is short.)
All this has got a point swear, see way back there among the mixes i'd do for friends and fiends was this mix titled "On Yer Bike" a best of the Biker & Youthsplotation movie soundtracks from the 60's and early 70's which everyone seemed to enjoy. It's been re-done a few times over the years it even made it on to CD [yea I know, I know] anyway again in the spirit of Sharity I offer it to you in bits and bytes it's original presentation was 2 Cassettes and then 2 Cd's now it'll be in several Downloads over the next couple of weeks I hope you dig it.
